HEALTH FAIRS

Knowing what’s broken is the first step to fixing it.

An effective and well-planned health fair can be an employer’s first step toward setting up a quality wellness program.  Health fairs tipically include biometric screening such as cholesterol tests, blood glucose measurements, triglyceride readings, BMI calculations and more. These fairs serve as a   “mini-physical” for employees, while simultaneously providing an employer with the material needed to craft a wellness program.  This is a mutually beneficial situation.  Even this basic assessment can enlighten an employee to the prevalence of a chronic condition, such as diabetes, and can be a “jumping-off” point for people who now know a basic indication of their own fitness and health.

Taking the information “back to the drawing board,” an employer may notice that a wellness program that is heavy on exercise and nutrition advice is needed.  Perhaps a smoking cessation program is necessary, as questionnaires may have been filled out indicating this.  The employer may choose to bring in speakers for “brown bag” seminars.

Options are endless.  Health Fairs also serve an intrinsic value: they can spur employees to become excited about change.  They let employees know that their employer cares about them and their health.  Most of all, the event identifies that which needs to be changed, evaluating what’s broken and starting individuals on the road to fixing their health and wellness.
